Hannah unfolded the next chair and placed it on the auditorium stage when the metal click of the door caught her attention. It wasn’t unusual for someone to peek their head inside the large room out of curiosity. The spelling bee scheduled for after school today, certainly qualified. But when she sensed movement somewhere in the inky blackness, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. She’d always been fearful of the dark.

“I’m almost afraid to show my face after our dismal failure with that chili recipe.”

A familiar voice calmed her. Breathe! It was Matt. “Don’t be silly. I can’t blame that all on you.”

He walked into the light, jogged up the center stairs, and joined her on stage. Without being asked, he grabbed the next chair and followed her lead. His natural instinct for service impressed her and one of his attributes she admired about him.

He paused as if seeing her for the first time. “Did you do something different with your hair? I like it.”

Hannah didn’t expect him to notice. She pulled at the newly clipped edges still trying to get used to the style the hairdresser convinced her would, ‘be wonderful on her’. Maybe she was right after all. Heat stung Hannah’s cheeks. “I did. Thanks.”

He turned back to his task. “I suppose organizing a spelling bee is right up your English alley?”

Hannah glanced at him, filled with fresh confidence. “It certainly is. Students who participate in events like this are more apt to join the debate team or forensics club down the road.”

“Impressive.” His gaze lingered.

“That’s why I supported running the event before homecoming. It’s a way to bring the students who aren’t directly tied to the football game, as athletes or cheerleaders, a way to earn recognition, so they can participate as well.”

“It’s easy to love them isn’t it?”

His sentiment and willingness to open up for his students touched her. She’d never met a man as comfortable in his own skin as Matt appeared to be.

“It certainly is.” Hannah sighed. “I wish I could teach all four years of English courses. One year doesn’t seem to be enough for me. It’s going to be difficult to let them go.”

“I can relate. We’re mentors at first, until you find yourself going to bat for them like a parent, hoping they nail the final exam. I find the end of the school year a mixture of excitement for them and a loss for me. But, I guess that’s life in high school.”

“You’re right but there’s a realization that teaching always brings to light too.”

He balanced a chair on one of its legs. “Which is?”

“How much I want kids of my own one day. At least, if that’s part of God’s plan for my life.”

The smile that spread across his face, told her she’d said something that pleased him. But what?

“You think it gets hard to juggle it all?”

Hannah reached for the last chair for her row. “What do you mean?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “Working and raising kids?”

“Not with the right person.
